Previous Seasons
Under the direction of head coach Tony Dungy, the 2005-2006 Indianapolis Colts have emerged as one of the best teams in the National Football League. Indianapolis fans are enjoying one of the Colts’ most promising seasons in their history at the Colts’ RCA Dome. A defense that was previously blamed for much of the team’s obstacles in reaching a Super Bowl, flourished in the 2005 NFL season because of standout defensive linemen Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Because of their well-rounded play, Indianapolis Colts football tickets are some of the most difficult tickets to get among all NFL teams.
Originally based in Baltimore, the Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984 during the middle of the night to avoid the city’s right to seize the team. Before arriving in the Midwest, Johnny Unitas played quarterback in Baltimore, earning the name “Mr. Clutch” for his performance in high-pressure situations. The Colts won the NFL title in 1958 under Unitas’ orchestration of a comeback against the New York Giants. After 18 seasons with the Colts, Unitas was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
During their first decade in Indianapolis, the Colts struggled through coaching changes and losing seasons. Quarterback Jeff George and running back Eric Dickerson were both expected to be stars for the team, but each of their personal problems proved to limit the team’s chances for success. With the acquisition of veteran quarterback Jim Harbaugh and running back Marshall Faulk, the Colts enjoyed moderate success during the latter half of the 1990s, but they remained a marginally talented team that could not capitalize on its strengths to compete with the AFC’s best teams. However, recent years have provided the time for the birth of a strong football tradition for the team. The Colts have made trips to the playoffs during four of the last seven seasons, which included a loss in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots in 2003.
Peyton Manning, selected first by the Colts in the 1998 NFL draft, has developed into the game’s premier passer. In the 2004 season, Manning broke Dan Marino’s previous record of 48 touchdown passes in one season, and the Colts’ array of receiving options makes stopping their offense nearly impossible. In addition to setting this new record, Manning and wide receiver Marvin Harrison shattered the quarterback-wide receiver tandem record of 94 touchdowns that was previously held by Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and recently retired Jerry Rice.
Many fans believe that the 2005-2006 Colts will be the team to finally reach the Super Bowl. After finally defeating the Patriots away from home earlier in the season, Manning and the Colts will finish the season with high hopes for the playoffs. While Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Brandon Stokely present three of the many passing options, running back Edgerrin James remains one of the league’s best rushers. If this team can win a championship, look for Indianapolis Colts football tickets to be even more difficult to purchase in the upcoming seasons.
